Conversion foreign driving license

The German car driving license for expats and immigrants

Information not valid for EU driving license

Law

Your driving authorization with your foreign driver's license (not EU driving licenses) expires 6 months after the first registration in Germany. So that you can continue driving in Germany afterwards, you have to convert your driving license.

Whether you are allowed to drive cars with manual or automatic transmission in Germany depends on which car you take your practical test on:

  • Practical test in Germany on a car with automatic transmission -> After that, you are only allowed to drive cars with automatic transmission.

  • Practical test in Germany on a car with manual gearbox -> Afterwards you are allowed to drive cars with manual gearbox and automatic gearbox.

Whether you have a probationary period in Germany depends on how long you have held your foreign driving licence:

  • Foreign driving licence longer than 2 years -> no probationary period in Germany

  • Foreign driving licence shorter than 2 years -> probationary period in Germany is so long that you hold your driving licence (foreign + German driving licence) for a total of 2 years.

Your prerequisite

  • Minimum age 18
  • Documents for application for a driver´s license
  • Valid foreign driving license must be accepted in Germany

Whether you need for the conversion a theoretical and/or practical exam, you find at the states list of the driver´s license office in Munich or at our customer care.

Requirements for the recognition of your foreign driving licence:

  • You did not have a regular residence in Germany at the time your foreign driving licence was issued. This also applies to the time of renewal of the foreign driving licence.

  • At the time your foreign driving licence was issued, you had your place of residence abroad for longer than 6 months.

Whether a conversion of your foreign driver's license is possible, decides only the district administration department Munich (KVR) department driver's license.

Your theory lessons

No theory lessons required.

Your driving lesson

The driving lessons consist of practice lessons and special lessons.

Your driving instructor ensures a stress-free learning atmosphere so that you enjoy the training and don't need too many lessons.

It goes without saying that your driving instructor is punctual and keeps to the driving times.

Always according to our motto: "As much as necessary, as little as possible!".

Our driving instructors train you according to our training plan.

A test simulation at the end of your training helps you and your driving instructor to assess whether you will pass the test successfully.

Driving lessons are also offered in English.

Training lesson

In the practice lessons you train the 5 basic driving tasks and driving in the city.

The number is variable. A minimum number is not specified.

We recommend the following number of driving appointments so that your driving instructor can show you all the traffic rules relevant to the examination:

  • approx. 4 appointments of 90 minutes each if you already have a lot of experience driving in a large German city and on German motorways
  • approx. 10 appointments of 90 minutes each if you have no experience of driving in a German city and on German motorways

Special lesson

In the special lessons you train driving on the motorway, country road and at night.

No special lessons are prescribed by law.

However, in the exam you can also drive on the motorway. We therefore recommend driving on the motorway for about 45 minutes. Your driving instructor can then check whether you would pass the test there.
