Practical examination

Your success means everything to us

  • Because your success truly matters to us, our instructors receive a bonus when you pass your exam.

These requirements you need to meet for the exam

  • You can take the practical exam no earlier than 1 month before reaching the minimum age requirement.

  • Your exam approval must be issued by the driver's license authority no later than 5 weeks before the exam date.

  • Check in your TÜV SÜD Drivers Club whether your exam approval for your licence class has been granted: Drivers Club Menu My Profile My Licence Classes

  • Also check whether any required vision correction is correctly recorded: Drivers Club My Exams Conditions.
If something is incorrect, contact your Fahrerlaubnisbehörde München or your local district office (Landratsamt) directly – via contact form, by phone, or in person.

  • Pay any outstanding advance payments (invoices) from TÜV Süd for your exam fees. These are available for download in your Drivers Club. For a repeat exam, the advance payment is due again.

  • The theory exam (if required) must be passed no later than 2 weeks before the practical exam – and must not be older than one year on the day of the practical exam.

  • TÜV Süd has an available appointment at your preferred date and time.

  • You have completed at least all the recommended driving lessons as outlined in your To-Do – as well as any additional lessons recommended by your instructor.

  • After completing the basic training in the city area, you must pass a progress assessment. Only then will your instructor confirm that you are ready for the exam and schedule it.

  • Approximately 4 weeks before the exam date, your instructor will reassess your exam readiness – with an additional progress assessment if needed. You will only be entered for the exam once your instructor is confident that you have reached the training objectives as defined in §1 FahrschAusbO (exam readiness) → §6 Fahrschüler-Ausbildungsordnung

Cancelling Your Exam – Here's How

  • You can cancel the booked exam free of charge up to 2 weeks before the exam date.

  • If this deadline is not met, the ‘Presentation for practical examination’ fee is due in accordance with the training contract.

  • If you do not wish to cancel an exam by the deadline, you must inform the TÜV Süd test centre immediately. All information about this FAQ TÜV Süd

How Payment Works

Your exam involves two separate payments:

  1. Exam Registration Fee

This is the driving school's fee for organising your exam.

  2. Cost Advance (invoice from TÜV SÜD)

This is the exam fee for conducting the exam by the testing authority TÜV SÜD. Once your test authorisation (Prüfauftrag) has been issued by the Kreisverwaltungsreferat or Landratsamt, you will receive an invitation from TÜV SÜD to register in the Drivers Club | TÜV SÜD, where you can pay the cost advance directly.

Please ensure that all outstanding amounts have been settled by the day of your exam – otherwise participation will unfortunately not be possible. The exam fees remain due in this case regardless.

Any remaining balance on your driving school account will be refunded to you promptly once you have passed your exam.

What You Need to Bring to the Exam

  • Passport or German identity card or residence permit

  • Previous German driving licence, if available

  • If necessary, glasses or contact lenses according to eye test

  • The examiner checks your ID.

  • Before the exam drive, the examiner asks you 3 questions about departure control.

  • The examiner may not ask you any questions during the test drive. He only tells you the directions. If the examiner asks your driving instructor to tell you the directions, it does not mean that you failed.

  • The exam result will be communicated to you.
