Good to know

  • The code 196 is not a standalone licence – it only entitles you to ride a moped or light motorcycle in class A1.
     
  • Upgrading to class A2 via the simplified route (practical test only, no training) is not possible with this entitlement.
     
  • The code 196 is only valid in Germany – it is not recognised abroad.

Ready to get started? Here's what you need

  • Minimum age to start training: 24 years → minimum age for the code 196 to be entered in your licence: 25 years
     
  • You have held a class B licence continuously for at least 5 years (including from an EU country). The code 196 is only entered in a German licence.
     
  • Theory lessons: 4 × 90 minutes, specifically for motorcycles
     
  • Driving lessons: 5 × 90 minutes
     
  • For your driving lessons you will need proper riding gear
     
  • No theory or practical exam
     
  • Once you have completed the training, you can have the code 196 entered in your licence using our certificate of participation. Full details → Munich Driving Licence Authority
