Senior Driving Competence Check

The driving competence check is aimed at older individuals who still drive regularly and wish to evaluate their current personal driving competence together with our driving instructors.

With the support of our instructors, the driving competence check provides you with a professional assessment of your current personal driving abilities.

This check is voluntary and does not result in the loss of your driver’s license. It is about guidance and safety, not an official examination.

The focus is on feedback, safety, and improvement.

You receive individual feedback on visual scanning, reaction behavior, traffic rules, vehicle handling, and more.

Reporting your driving competence to authorities is explicitly excluded.

Requirements

  • Driver’s License Class B, B78 or B197

Objectives of the Driving Competence Check

  • Identify strengths and potential areas of risk

  • Increase safety in road traffic

  • Refresh driving experience

  • Boost self-confidence

  • Early support before insecurities or conflicts with relatives arise

Process

1. Short preliminary discussion (approx. 15 minutes)

At the beginning, it is explained to you that there is no test and your driver’s license is not at risk.

The driving instructor asks about your everyday driving: Where do you drive most often? Are there certain situations you find difficult?

If needed, our instructor explains the vehicle’s controls.

2. Feedback drive (approx. 60 minutes)

Typical situations observed during the drive:

  • Visual guidance & shoulder check

  • Speed adjustment

  • Distance keeping & lane positioning

  • Intersections, roundabouts, turning

  • Highway or rural road sections (depending on your preference)

  • Your reaction to unexpected situations

The instructor intervenes only if it is relevant for safety.

3. Feedback discussion (“debrief”) (approx. 15 minutes)

At the end, you receive detailed feedback:

  • What do you do well?

  • Where could more safety be achieved?

  • Which habits could be improved?

  • Recommendation for possible refresher lessons – without obligation.

You will also receive a driving report outlining your strengths and areas for improvement.
