Duration of training

If you do not hold a licence in another class, the minimum duration with intensive participation is 5 weeks for the theoretical training and 2 weeks for the practical training (with an average number of driving lessons required). A longer, regular timeframe is possible at any time.
If you already hold another license category, the minimum duration with intensive participation is 3 weeks for the theoretical lessons and 1 week for the practical training (with an average number of driving lessons required). A longer, regular time frame is possible at any time.
You may also take driving lessons before attending the theoretical training.
You can use the FAHREN LERNEN app to book as many driving lessons (90 minutes each) per day and per week as you like.

While your exam authorisation is being processed by the driver licensing authority, you are already allowed to start the theoretical lessons and your driving appointments (driving lessons).
From the moment you apply for your exam permit (driving licence application) at the driving licence authority until your practical exam, it usually takes 14–24 weeks:

- approx. 8–14 weeks processing time at the driving licence authority to issue your exam approval

- approx. 2 weeks' lead time to book your theory exam at the TÜV Süd test centre

- approx. 4–8 weeks' lead time (depending on the season) to book your practical exam at the TÜV Süd test centre. You may take the practical exam at the earliest 2 weeks after the theory exam.
